“SMART” Robotic Prostate Removal Surgery Comes to Israel
Dr. David Samadi has performed Israel’s first ever “SMART Surgery” robotic prostate removal surgery at Rambam Hospital in Haifa, with three surgeries performed in total over the past three days.
Robotic prostate removal has several advantages over traditional prostate removal surgery including less blood loss, a shorter hospital stay, and a better post-operative quality of life regarding urinary control and sexual function.
Dr. Samadi says that the learning curve for robotic prostate surgery is steep, and that he’s excited to have the opportunity to share his knowledge and to learn from the Israeli team in order to better serve patients.
Over the next few days Dr. Samadi will be performing live surgeries in Tel-Aviv and demonstrating his high-tech technique called SMART surgery to other doctors. SMART surgery aims to preserve the nerves around the prostate relating to sexual function. The surgeries are performed in an hour and a half and will be telecast to doctors in Israel.
Dr. Samadi believes that the future of robotic surgery lies in teleconferencing and telementoring to share techniques and experience between doctors around the world. He says that the concept of telesurgery where operations can be performed on patients over long distances could one day be a reality.
