Dr. David Samadi, MD Introduces His SMART Surgery Website for Prostate Cancer Treatment Education

A board-certified urologist and oncologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of urologic diseases, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, and prostate cancer, Dr. David B. Samadi is proud to announce the launch of his SMART Surgery website, www.smart-surgery.com. The website features details on his signature SMART Surgery Technique (Samadi Modified Advanced Robotic Technique), which he employs as the Chief of Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. “My SMART Technique is basically a traditional open anatomic surgical technique based on the robotic surgery platform,” explains Dr. Samadi.

The highly educational site features information on prostate cancer and surgical prostate cancer treatments, including robotic prostatectomy, as well as treatments for bladder and kidney cancers. Dr. Samadi goes into comprehensive detail on his SMART Surgery Technique and even provides patient education videos on the procedure. “My SMART Technique is an advanced technique that allows me to give my patients a 95% cure rate while achieving continence rates of 97% and potency rates of 81% within 1 year,” explained Dr. Samadi, who has performed over 3,000 robotic-assisted prostatectomies in his practice, about half with the SMART Technique. Dr. Samadi refers to this as the “treatment trifecta” which he explains in detail on his website.

Dr. Samadi created this website to be informative to patients because a prostate cancer diagnosis is a fearful one but is “not necessarily a death sentence.” Because of this, Dr. Samadi feels that surgical experience is paramount. “Positive outcomes to robotic prostatectomies are a result of my modifications to the robotic platform with the SMART Technique, which is primarily due to the nerve sparing factor,” said Dr. Samadi. He further explained that the SMART Surgery Technique adds to the learning curve of the robotic surgeon, which makes volume and experience in this type of surgery so important.

Dr. Samadi uses the da Vinci surgical robot to give him increased ease of movement, magnification and visualization as well as superior dexterity and precision. Hand controls to maneuver the EndoWrist® instruments of the robot, which provides unparalleled 360 degrees range of motion. Foot pedals maneuver the camera inside the patient, zooming in and out, to give Dr. Samadi a high definition 3D view of the prostate, nearby organs, nerves and blood vessels.

The benefits of da Vinci robotic prostatectomy include:

  • a shorter hospital stay
  • smaller incisions and scars
  • less pain
  • low risk of bleeding and infection
  • faster healing
  • minimal risk of impotence or incontinence

“While the da Vinci robot and my SMART Technique gives me more precision to thoroughly remove the prostate cancer, I’m in total control and not the robot,” says Dr. Samadi. “The surgery is not managed by the robot or a computer — each operation is treated as a unique operation, managed by me from beginning to end.”

The success of Dr. Samadi’s SMART Technique is due to reduced trauma to the delicate nerve responsible for sexual and urinary function. On his website, Dr. Samadi details the many advanced minimally invasive treatments for prostate cancer, including laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and laparoscopic robotic radical prostatectomy. With his background as a fellow, trained in laparoscopy and robotic prostatectomy, Dr. Samadi is an internationally recognized expert in both fields. “However, I firmly stand behind robotic prostatectomy as the most ideal prostate treatment because it removes the prostate gland, which allows me to more accurately stage, grade and cure the cancer, reducing complications and assuring a better quality of life. Patients travel all over the world for my medical expertise, not just the robotic surgery technology. I perform all surgeries from beginning to end.”
