Dr. David Samadi to Co-Direct the 1st International Robotic Prostatectomy Symposium in Florida

Dr. David B. Samadi, a prostate cancer treatment and robotic surgery expert as well the Vice Chairman, Department of Urology, and Chief of Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City will be co-directing the First International Robotic Prostatectomy Symposium this weekend in Miami, Florida. Hosted by the non-profit organization Prostate Awareness Research and Treatment (P.A.R.T.), the event takes place February 25 and 26, 2011, at the famed Fontainebleau Hotel. The symposium will feature live broadcasts on difficult cases of robotic prostate cancer surgeries performed by worldwide experts, as well as educational workshops led by urological experts. Simultaneous English to Spanish translation will be broadcast throughout the symposium.

“The event promises to be invaluably informative for urologists and other healthcare professionals who wish to learn more about this innovative surgery,” said Dr. Samadi, a urologic oncologist who is also the creator of the SMART (Samadi Modified Advanced Robotic Technique) Surgery. The technique combines Samadi’s open radical prostatectomy and laparoscopy skills with his oncologic expertise and unique robotic surgical experience.

Robotic prostatectomy represents the trifecta of prostate health

“Our intention with the symposium is to raise awareness about prostate cancer and prostate cancer treatment options,” said Dr. Samadi. The proceeds from the symposium will go towards preventive prostate cancer research as well as free robotic prostate surgeries for the underprivileged, performed by symposium co-director Dr. Sanjay Razdan. “Robotic prostatectomy represents the trifecta of prostate health: continence, potency and a cure,” said Samadi, “with added benefits of reduced blood loss, less pain, shorter hospital stay and recovery.”

Dr. Samadi successfully performed over 3,200 robotic prostate surgeries

The SMART Technique is also known as bloodless prostate surgery which duplicates the traditional open technique on the robotic platform. “It does not require opening the endopelvic fascia or cutting the dorsal vein complex, therefore requiring no suture and resulting in less damage to the neurovascular bundle, which is responsible for sexual function and urinary control,” said Dr. Samadi, who’s successfully performed over 3,200 robotic prostate surgeries in his practice worldwide.

Dr. Samadi believes that the robot is just a tool that improves his surgical vision and magnification. “It allows angles of dissection that were not achievable before with open or straight laparoscopic instruments,” said Samadi. “The SMART Technique allows patients to achieve continence rates of 97% and potency rates of 81% within 1 year, as well as a 95% cure rate, something I call a ‘treatment trifecta,'” he explains.

“The only things that matter to my patients are a cure, urinary control and sexual function,” said Dr. Samadi, “and the SMART Surgery Technique allows me to successfully give all three of these to my patients and return them to their quality of life — that’s why it’s SMART.” Samadi welcomes all to join him at this world-class medical event.
